Protein to Build Muscle Mass – Know the Good From the Bad
Any body builder who has done his homework knows that he needs protein to build muscle mass. What he may not know is why, or where to get the best protein. Protein to build muscle mass can come from many sources, but not every source is a good one. There are good and bad proteins that anyone trying to build muscle mass should be aware of.
First the why. Why is it necessary to get a lot of protein to build muscle mass? Other than water, the human body contains more protein than any other substance. Protein serves a multitude of purposes for the body, two of which are of great importance to a body builder. Protein builds muscle tissue and increases energy. It is recommended that in order for protein to build muscle mass, a body builder should take in one gram of good protein for every pound of body weight.
Distinguishing the good from the bad proteins to build muscle mass can be difficult if you are not willing to put a little time and effort into some research. Take an afternoon and sit down at your computer to make a list of good proteins and bad ones.
Bad sources of protein will have a lot of saturated fat. While you want to get some fat and a lot of calories to build your muscles, you do not want fat that is unhealthy or dangerous to other parts of your body. Saturated fat raises the cholesterol level and can cause stroke or damage to the heart.
Bad proteins can come from foods like hot dogs, bacon, sausage, dark poultry meat, and even some cuts of steak. Stay away from anything fried, too, because one of the worst sources of bad fat comes from the oils used to do the frying.
Good proteins will also include some fat content, but as a body builder you want to get more calories in order to gain, and there is no better source for calories than fat. Some good proteins to build muscle mass include eggs, cottage cheese, chicken and turkey breasts (skinless), most lean beef, most fish (salmon is one of the best), and most protein supplements.
Milk is on the fence. Some experts will tell you that if you want protein to build muscle mass drink lots of whole milk. Others suggest that whole milk is a bad source of protein and only skim milk should be consumed. It seems the jury is still out, but they are leaving towards allowing whole milk to be on the good protein list. Milk is beneficial in so many ways, how can it be bad?
